Description

The medicinal properties of St. John’s wort have been known since ancient times, with the first reports of them dating back to the 19th century, when the Greek physician Dioskurides recommended preparing a concoction of St. John’s wort seeds and honey. He recommended daily consumption of this elixir for preventive purposes and to improve the overall condition of the body. Folk beliefs attributed the plant’s ability to ward off the devil, even calling it “fuga daemonum,” meaning “chasing away the devil.” In addition, by hanging St. John’s wort on the window, it was believed to protect the house from lightning. The sap of the plant was used for divination and to detect diseases, treating hemorrhages and worms with it. St. John’s wort ash was used to make “bell salt,” effectively used to treat cancers of the liver and digestive system.

Classification: St. John’s wort has been classified as a modulator of the nervous system. Supplementation with St. John’s wort leads to an increase in neurotransmitters, serotonin and dopamine, which translates into its antidepressant, pro-cognitive and sleep aid properties. In addition, the plant regulates the functioning of the digestive system, especially concerning bile secretion and accelerating digestion. Ingredients in St. John’s wort have a beneficial effect on the appearance of the skin, and due to its photosensitizing properties, it is used in the treatment of vitiligo.

Composition: St. John’s wort herb contains a wealth of active substances, including naphthodiantrones, phloroglucinol derivatives, flavonoids, proanthocyanidins, phenolic acids, essential oils, xanthones, carotenoids, saturated hydrocarbons, alcohols, and many others.

Effects of St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum):

Nervous System:

Antidepressant effects: St. John’s wort has beneficial effects in relieving anxiety and depression, acting as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Clinical studies have shown comparable efficacy to tricyclic drugs, with a treatment period of 4 to 6 weeks.

1 Antiepileptic and Neuroprotective Effects: St. John’s wort is a plant that has been attributed with anti-epileptic and neuroprotective properties. Animal studies suggest that St. John’s wort extracts may have an effect on reducing seizures and protecting nerve cells from the harmful effects of

2 Supporting Cognitive Functions: St. John’s wort shows potential to support cognitive function. Compounds such as hyperforin and hypericin present in the plant may benefit thought processes and improve concentration and memory abilities.

3 Antidepressant Properties: Studies indicate that St. John’s wort is an effective agent in relieving mild to moderate depression. Responsible for this are, among others, hyperforin and hypericin, which, however, are not soluble in water. Therefore, liposomal or alcoholic extracts of St. John’s wort are recommended for depression.

4 Serotonin Management: Hyperforin, contained in St. John’s wort, increases the concentration of 5-HT2 receptors in the brain while inhibiting serotonin reuptake. This effect is not directly due to the inhibition of transporters of this neurotransmitter, but to the elevation of sodium concentration in nerve cells.

5 Dopamine Management: St. John’s wort supplementation can lead to increased dopamine concentrations in the brain. Studies in rats have shown an increase in the concentration of the neurotransmitter in the frontal cortex, resulting in increased energy, better concentration and improved memory abilities.

6. Brain Tumor Therapy: Studies suggest that St. John’s wort can aid in the treatment of germ cell gliomas and stellate tumors, showing synergistic effects with cytostatic drugs. It is a popular form of therapy for brain tumors in Germany.

7 Effects on the Gastrointestinal System: Thanks to its flavonoid content, St. John’s wort has a relaxant effect on the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract. It is used to treat inflammation of the gastric and intestinal mucosa, colic, abdominal pain, diarrhea, heartburn, decreased appetite and flatulence. It also helps in the production of bile, facilitating digestion, and drinking the infusion before meals speeds up metabolism.

8 Liver Support: St. John’s wort enhances bile production, reduces the formation of deposits and bile stasis, which supports the liver. Its antibacterial properties can counter Helicobacter pylori infection, being effective in the treatment of stomach ulcers.

St. John’s Wort in Cosmetics and Skin Therapy

1 Use in Cosmetics: St. John’s wort, long appreciated in cosmetics, finds its use mainly due to the red substance contained in the vesicles, the main component being hypericin. In addition, the tannins present in St. John’s wort give it an astringent and anti-inflammatory effect, making the plant highly valued in the cosmetic industry.

2 Atopic Dermatitis Therapy: A study by German researchers confirmed the effectiveness of St. John’s wort in the treatment of atopic dermatitis. A study conducted on 21 volunteers, published in the journal Phytomedicine in 2003, showed that St. John’s wort ointment brought improvements to the skin, particularly in reducing atopic lesions. The preparation was well tolerated and had no side effects.

3 Treatment of Wounds, Burns, and Acne: St. John’s wort, due to its astringent and anti-inflammatory properties, is used to treat cuts, frostbite, and burns. It shows the ability to disinfect wounds, accelerate the healing process, and tone the skin. Thanks to hypericin, St. John’s wort is also valued in the treatment of acne.

4 Supporting the Treatment of Vitiligo: St. John’s wort extract is used supportively in the treatment of vitiligo. Oral preparations and lubrication of the skin with St. John’s wort juice or oil, combined with ultraviolet light exposure, are designed to alleviate symptoms of the disease by reorganizing melanocytes and stimulating melanin secretion.

5 Use in Combating Skin Rashes: St. John’s wort decoction is recommended for combating skin rashes in children, due to its mildness and anti-allergenic properties. It is effective in speeding up wound healing, which is especially important in immobilized people, where it can be used to wash areas prone to ulcers and sores.

6 Effects on the Urinary System: thanks to its high content of flavonoids, especially hyperoside, St. John’s wort counteracts the formation of urolithiasis. It has been proven effective in reduced urinary excretion and urinary diathesis. Its diuretic effect prevents the formation of deposits and stones, supporting the health of the urinary tract.

St. John’s Wort: Safety and Drug Interaction Considerations.

St. John’s wort is a plant with many medicinal properties, but its use requires caution due to several important factors. In medicine, its potential is limited by its photosensitizing properties and its effect on cytochrome P450 isoenzymes, which are key to the metabolism of many drugs.

Drug Interactions: St. John’s wort can affect the effectiveness of many drugs. Compounds such as hypericin can activate cytochrome P450 isoenzymes, which reduces drug absorption and increases drug resistance. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid combining St. John’s wort with drugs such as contraceptives, antibiotics, anticoagulants, digoxin, anticancer chemotherapeutics, and psychotropic drugs used to treat depression.

Effects on Skin: The hypericin contained in St. John’s wort increases sensitivity to sunlight, which can lead to photosensitivity and burns, especially in fair-skinned people with nevi and existing skin lesions. The use of St. John’s wort preparations in the summer should be cautious and preceded by information from a doctor.

Treatment of Wounds and Pigmented Lesions: When treating wounds and pigmented lesions with St. John’s wort, it is recommended to limit sun exposure. This is especially important to avoid adverse phototoxic reactions.

People using St. John’s wort preparations should always inform their doctor about this fact. This is crucial not only for the effectiveness of the pharmacotherapy provided, but also for the safety of the patient’s health and life.

It is worth noting, however, that the toxicity of St. John’s wort is relatively low, allowing it to be used for a longer period of time.
