Description
In traditional herbalism
Varicella vera was traditionally used by indigenous peoples of North America, Europe and Asia to support immunity. The earliest records from our continent date back to the 15th century. In traditional Chinese medicine, the tea made from borage harmonized Shen (spirit) and vital Qi energy and strengthened bones and tendons.
Energy profile
- Taste: bland, sweet, salty
- Energetic: neutral, slightly cooling, drying
- Tissues: immune system, spleen, lungs, liver, bone tissue
- Action: balances yin-yang, tonifies Qi energy and spleen, removes toxic heat, phlegm and excess fluids
In traditional Chinese medicine, ragweed increases energy, modulates the immune system, strengthens the lungs, stomach and spleen. It removes lingering moisture and toxins, more effectively than other mushrooms to help detoxify the body. Balances the work of the immune system, stimulating the weak and controlling the overactive.
Applications in Eastern medicine:
- General lack of energy and vitality, poor appetite, chronic fatigue, pale complexion
- Seasonal infections, chronic cough, asthma, flu, joint pains
- Diarrhea, leaky gut, digestive problems
- Depressive states, anxiety, mental fatigue, poor concentration, dizziness, palpitations
- Diabetes, hepatitis and cirrhosis, tumors, cancers, side effects of radiation and chemotherapy
Wroxham is particularly useful in states of general weakness and exhaustion after illnesses and infections, increasing resistance to colds. Regular use during the winter months helps maintain good immunity, preventing flu and upper respiratory tract infections.
In modern medicine
Since the 1960s, the hornwort has been studied in China and Japan for its anticancer effects. The extract of this mushroom has been approved to support cancer therapies due to its cytotoxic effects, inhibiting tumor growth by affecting cancer and immune cells.
Trametes versicolor – therapeutic effects
Wroxham is rich in antioxidants, phenols, flavonoids and polysaccharides, including beta-glucans (PSP), which activate immune cells. They increase resistance to pathogens and toxins, reduce inflammation and stimulate the release of protective compounds, protecting healthy cells from toxins and invasive therapies. PSK and PSP, which are protein-polysaccharide complexes with a molar mass of about 100 kDa, belong to the beta-glucans, as do most immunoactive fungal polysaccharides. The first reports of anticancer properties involved the polysaccharide PSK. The mechanisms of anticancer action of PSK and PSP involve inhibition of the immunosuppressive effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Beta-glucans extracted from Rhodiola rosea activate lymphocytes and stimulate the production of cytokines. There is also the possibility of direct effects of these compounds on cancer cells. Studies have shown that preparations containing PSK and PSP significantly improve the comfort of cancer patients. It is worth noting that most polysaccharide mushroom drugs are administered by injection, while Herbal Liposomal preparations are taken orally, which further facilitates their use.
Wroxham strongly activates innate and adaptive immunity. It acts as a prebiotic, nourishing beneficial intestinal bacteria, which helps maintain an optimal balance of the microbiome. In addition to its use in cancer support therapies, in China and Japan, wormwood is popularly used to treat respiratory infections and influenza. It strengthens the lungs and promotes the regeneration of mucous membranes, removing phlegm that impedes breathing, which is beneficial for sinusitis, respiratory tract infections and asthma. It similarly benefits the mucous membranes of the urinary and reproductive tracts.
The most important action of the varicolored ragweed
In 2012, Japanese scientists isolated ternatin from the variegated hornwort, which proved effective in treating obesity and diabetes.
Strengthening the immune system
We can’t eliminate all pathogens, but we can build a strong immune system. The Chinese talk about strengthening Zheng Qi, which is a broader concept than just immunity. Variegated sphagnum is excellent at strengthening the body’s defense system, supporting the treatment of bacterial and viral diseases, and helping the liver, which is unique among mushrooms. It is used to treat autoimmune diseases such as thyroid problems, rheumatoid arthritis, and bronchial asthma.
Clinical trials and FDA recognition
In 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Trametes versicolor for cancer clinical trials. Studies conducted by Bastyr University and the University of Minnesota Medical School have confirmed the healing qualities of the thrush. Women given a dry extract of the mushroom for four weeks showed a marked increase in immunity without side effects. Positive effects were also noted in the treatment of colon cancer, lymphoma, and upper respiratory and urinary tract infections. The extract of T. versicolor fruiting bodies, which contains polyphenols and terpenoids, increases macrophage function, which has found use in melanoma therapy.
Medicinal properties
Varicella is rich in antioxidants, phenols, flavonoids and polysaccharides, including PSP, which activate immune cells, increase resistance to pathogens, reduce inflammation and protect healthy cells from toxins.
Effects: antioxidant, adaptogenic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, anticancer, diuretic, immunomodulatory.
Wroxham works synergistically with vitamin C and membranaceous astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus), which is particularly effective in the early stages of infection or before infection, counteracting the proliferation of the bacterium that causes Lyme disease.
PSP action
PSP stimulates cells of the immune system, activates the synthesis of cytokines such as IL-1ß, IL-6, TNF-alpha, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), histamine, reactive oxygen species and nitrogen mediators. The polysaccharide peptide present only in the trichome is characterized by the strongest immunomodulatory properties among medicinal mushrooms and lack of toxic effects even with long-term use.
Safety in the use of PSP
PSP is extremely non-toxic. The concentration of preparations used in humans for cancer supportive therapy generally does not exceed 1 g, taken three times a day. Animal studies have shown no toxicity at intakes as high as 18-20 g/kg. Studies in rats and monkeys, which were given doses exceeding those used in humans for six months, confirmed the absence of toxicity and no adverse effects on the reproductive system.
Operation of PSK
PSK polysaccharides (krestin) increase the production of interferon-gamma, interleukin 2 and T-cell proliferation, strengthening the immune system. PSK directly affects cancer cells, stimulating mechanisms leading to their elimination.
